Alexander Sovan

Baby Boy Del Chiaro has arrived!  I know for the longest time we could not decide on the name.  Even after he was born, it was a difficult decision.  We finally agreed that we wanted him to have a Cambodian middle name like Alana has, so we picked the best one that we liked - Sovan.  We did a process of elimination of which name sounded best with Sovan DelChiaro.  We finally came down to Alexander or Andrew.  Alexander won because Jeff only really wanted Andrew if the middle name could be Jeffrey.  I really liked the idea of giving our son a cultural name like his sister has.

The delivery itself was really fast!  I was in total shock at how fast it went.  I went in at 730am but it took me a while to get checked in and settled and I was already 2.5-3cm dilated.  They started the pitocin almost right away and I was having contractions but couldn't feel any pain, and by 930am the doctor came in to break my water.  After the water break, it was really fast!  The nurse told me to go take a walk and I did but quickly had to return to my room because the pain was so bad.  The contractions came in so strong and I was already begging for the epidural.  The anesthesiologist came in around 10 with the epidural and had it in my back by 1030 or so.  They checked me again and I was already at 7cm!  Next thing I knew, I was trying to read my magazine when the contractions were getting stronger - I couldn't feel them of course.  Nurse came in and I was at 10cm!  They wanted me to start pushing right away - it was around 11:30 by now.  My doc came in around 12 and I got the baby's head out by 12:14 or so.  That's the official birth time.  They had to give me an episiotomy because his shoulders were too broad to fit through and the doc had to pull him out a little bit because his heart rate started to drop.  She said if his shoulders were any bigger, she would have had to vacuum him out and worse case go to C-section!  But she said with his size, I would have torn anyways so she had to cut me. He was 8lbs and 9oz in weight and 21 inches in height!  When I hold him, I can't believe he fit inside me! I am also very happy to be off the diabetes diet and back on normal food!  Alex's blood sugar levels have been fine.

The recovery has been going well.  We even got discharged early out of the hospital.  It was nice because I really missed my Alana and I didn't want her to think that we forgot about her.  I am still in pain, but am ok. When we got home to Alana, she acted fine with the baby.  She was curious and very gentle with the baby.  Today, she tried to give the baby hugs and she even wanted to hold the baby.

Alex is proving to be a different baby than Alana.  First, he can really cry loud and he gets a little hysterical if we don't calm him right away.  He is also really particular about being wrapped up nice and tight.  He's been nursing well and seems to be on a good schedule already.  Last night was one of the most difficult nights, but I think he was also in a lot of pain due to the circumcision and not having any milk yet.  He was really hungry.  Well, he certainly let me know that!  Here are some pictures of the little guy.  He hasn't really spent much time with his eyes open yet.
